That Crippling Crossface: Chris Benoit Five Years On

Notice there's no picture here. There won't be any YouTube videos or other miscellany links. There's nothing to celebrate or make fun of in this what is sure to be somber blog post.

Instead of making a passé entry on what happened, I'll take you on a journey of my life through a five day span. Starting on June 22nd, 2007, and ending on the 26th, you'll see how this unspeakable tragedy unfolded as if this was a horrible remake of 'Ragtime'.

June 22nd: Finally, this day was my HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION! Conquering through special education to ending up being a regular mainstream student, I received my New York Regents diploma. With dress rehearsals starting at nine in the morning, the ceremony at 6, and then the all-night graduation party, damn am I tired! Sadly the footage is lost, but there is a frame on the video my parents recorded of a house principal doing a face palm as my diploma was accepted. I think the guy had a headache, but the proof is in the pudding!

June 23rd: I'm getting ready to go. NHRA's in town for the annual extravaganza at the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. What a better way to celebrate being done with school than going to see 7,000 horsepower freaks of nature burn some rubber on a drag strip?

June 24th: Yee-haw, just got home from the festivities! Not that hot of a day, and it was pretty damn fast. Don Prudhomme scored two wins in Larry Dixon (Top Fuel) and Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car), while Andrew Hines won Pro Stock Motorcycle, and Greg Anderson shook off 'The Curse”* to win Pro Stock Car. Juan Montoya won the Cup race out in Sonoma, a nice little surprise. Wait, a Dodge winning a fuel mileage race? THAT'S GARBAGE!

(Goes to lordsofpain.net. I's want to know backstage newz dammit!)

Um.... what in the living hell?

Chris Benoit isn't at the Vengeance (ahem, Night of Champions) event? They say it's a family emergency, so it's gotta be just a one night absence, right?!?!?!?

Johnny Nitro has been named as Benoit's substitute against CM Punk for the ECW Championship. Nitro won the championship, but that's not the big story. That would be: what happened to Benoit and/or his family?

June 25th: Haven't heard any new rumors yet this particular morning, I think thankfully. Tonight's RAW is supposed to be about who blew up Vince's limo. 3 hours in length, oh boy is THIS gonna suck. June of 2007 wasn't a good month at all to be a wrestling fan, as every PPV and TV show between WWE and TNA has been drizzling shits so far.

Around 4PMish, I pop the Chris Benoit DVD into my brand new laptop, a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4577. It's the fifth or sixth time I watched this documentary in total, mainly because it's a feel good story about a kid who overcame the odds to make his dreams come true...

5:00PM Lordsofpain.net confirmed it.

Then WWE.com confirmed it.

I told my sister who had started work at IBM that day, and she was dumbfounded. That's not a word to describe her at all.

“CHRIS BENOIT DEAD AT 38”

I was steadfast in silence, as I started to read the details.

Nancy and Daniel, wife and son of the grappler, were also found deceased.

In a stunning turn of events, everyone who had tickets for the night's RAW had been turned away. The opening segment of RAW saw Vince, in uncomfortably casual attire, standing dead center of the ring explaining how tonight should have been centered on his 'demise'. Instead, it will be a tribute show to someone who has actually passed on. Since this was a 3 hour RAW, the program started at 8 PM on the East Coast.

As 9:30 rolled around, disturbing details came in about the crime scene. Apparently, it was figured out that Chris killed Daniel, Nancy, then himself. Since the show was already balls deep into the airwaves, WWE didn't have time to yank or apologize for the images. This wasn't the first time WWE had bad timing concerning programming, as an angle with Muhammad Hassan and Undertaker in 2005 aired the same day as the London bombings. Just 3 days before that monstrosity of a Great American Bash...

I digress.

I had the unfortunate responsibility of posting a new thread in the WrestleCrap forums, under the sub-forum 'ASK RD (Reynolds) & BLADE (Braxton)”. It roared to nine pages within a couple of hours. Then the forum moderator, Madison Carter, made probably the smartest move that night of shutting down the whole works temporarily. That being said, I thought at the time to sleep it off, thinking I misread something.

June 26th: The shit hit the fan.

Every media outlet, from CBS to CNN, from FOX to FOX NEWS, and from NBC to MS(C)NBC had this story as a top-leading headline. “PRO WRESTLER KILLED HIS FAMILY”. Professional Wrestling as a whole was coming under attack during this media hailstorm. Nancy Grace wanted the WWE as a company dead, and so did many others.

Hell, I even questioned my loyalty as a fan. The programming shown lately was atrocious, and quite frankly, this may have been the final straw. A grizzly scene, and worse yet, a grim prognosis for the WWE.

While more angles to the murders were drawn out (like the texts to Chavo Guerrero and the fact that the murders happened on Saturday), it seemed as if WWE was getting blasted from all angles. Some rightfully so, and some not rightfully so.

Chris, from what I have gathered, is that one guy who would perform through crippling endeavors. He had sustained concussion after concussion, but kept on trucking. After his autopsy, it was revealed that Benoit's brain was so badly deteriorated that it resembled an 81 year old man instead of a healthy nearly-40-year-old man he was.

The DVD I had playing in my laptop the day before? Every copy from every retailer was ordered to be yanked, and destroyed. Suddenly, a DVD not worth more than $19 brand new now commands three or four times the price.

Insanity was at a fever pitch, and wrestling as a whole has not still, and never will, recover from this.

_________________________________________________

Like terrorist attacks or major political shenanigans, this is one of those events where everyone knew where they were when they found out.

As a young man who graduated high school looking forward to the rest of his life, this was an extremely shaky way to start. It seemed like one of the few things I truly loved was under attack, and it was up to me to decide to say, “Should I stay or should I go?”

Time went on, and I stuck with it.

WWE was in a badly dark spot at this point. When you combine multiple injured big stars with the Benoit atrocities, the ratings plummeted and the faith in the company as a whole plunged almost as bad as a stock market crash.

I wanted to see WWE come out on the other end though, and by the time the 2008 Royal Rumble rolled around, I was seemingly convinced that WWE had overcome some of its demons.

Thank you for taking the time out to read this piece of literature. This was some sad therapy.

*: 'The Curse'. When I first when to E-Town in 2003, Greg Anderson was one of the first people I met. I took a picture with him, my then fourteen year-old self towered over this guy. Anderson, in Superman mode at the time, won a lot of races in 2003, but went out first round at that event from the first seed!

Triple H/Shawn Michaels Summerslam 2002: Bad Booking’s 20,000th View Post

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-09h37m50s13

Well folks, this blog is one year old. It has done more than I ever could have dreamed.

Today, I’ll be capping a match that pretty much started my WWE fandom.

My first episode of RAW was the July 22nd, 2002 edition (as of this writing, Monday’s RAW will mark 11 years exactly I became a full-time fan). It was the night after Vengeance, where The Rock became Undisputed WWE Champion.

Also occurring at Vengeance was Triple H signing a contract with RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff after a friendly persuasion from Shawn Michaels.

Eric tried to stir some crap up with The Game and The Heartbreak Kid by making HBK Triple H’s “manager”, HBK quit, then came back, with the notion that the old band D-Generation X would surface.

Only that didn’t happen.

Triple H delivered the world’s worst Pedigree to his best friend.

Yes, one that looked worse than Marty Garner’s.

The week later, Triple H was explaining his actions while he got news that someone had their head rammed through a car window.

That man was Michaels.

A “whodunit” unfolded. It resulted with Triple H taking blame after the security camera cleared showed the malevolence of The Game. Triple H only admitted it because he wanted to prove to the world that Shawn was weak and was vulnerable.

On a satellite camera, with bandages and cuts all over, Shawn vowed to return for Summerslam to a MASSIVE POP.

So the road to Long Island was paved, and the two brawled their way to SummerSlam.

August 25th, 2002 was indeed a hot and humid day as I remember it in New York State.

A huge card of action surrounding this match ensued. Kurt Angle made Rey Mysterio tap in the best opener of all 2002. Edge defeated Eddie Guerrero in a decent match, ditto for Ric Flair on Chris Jericho. Lance Storm & Christian used devious means to retain their tag gold against Booker T & Goldust. RVD defeated Chris Benoit in a underrated classic to win the Intercontinental Championship. Undertaker defeated Test in a battle of big men. Lastly, Brock Lesnar became Undisputed WWE Champion after shockingly defeating The Rock clean as a sheet.

The match covered today was just before the Rock/Brock main event.

A match so epic it should have been the main event!

So here we go!

The chapter from the Summerslam 2002 DVD kicks off with Jim Ross and Jerry “the King” Lawler discussing how Shawn’s been away for four years leading up to this encounter. Most people watching today (or at that point) may not have seen HBK perform either live or on the soon-to-be-developed YouTube.

As usual, the video package is A+. Anything less would be utter failure if WWE had a college with a course solely dedicated to video production. The main summary shows Shawn and Hunter as friends closer to brothers. However, that brotherhood was shattered by the evilness and the ego by a man who believes his time is here and now.

Shawn comes out first to an epic introduction. Shades of Undertaker’s King of the Ring 1998 entrance as pyro shoots off every time HBK takes a step. JR hopes that this match is not a decision Shawn will regret for the rest of his life.

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-09h40m31s134

Up next is Triple H, fresh off of bone chip removal in right arm. Ridiculously jacked, fitting of what the character had at the time. For some odd reason, HBK made his entrance, then the bell sounded for Howard to do ONLY HHH’S ENTRANCE! If this was Lillian Garcia, both men would have had botched intros!

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-09h42m43s183

As Motorhead blares, another thing blares: Shawn’s ego. Not afraid to stand off against his former best friend, he jumps over to the top rope in a corner and tells him figuratively to bring it!

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-09h43m58s179

Shawn throws first shirt and here we go!

The first few minutes are split between the two, with Shawn getting a little more offense in. Like the good ol’ days, Shawn does a crossbody over the top and onto The Game! Huge moment, and it shows HBK hasn’t missed a step in four years.

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-11h55m23s38

Want more proof? Hunter, after averting trash can lid disaster a first time, tries to grab Shawn by the hair back into the ring. Shawn then smacks the lid against Hunter’s head, and skins the cat back in! HOLY MOLY BATMAN!

Shawn makes Hunter eat more trash can, and follows it up with a shot from the top rope. Sensing superkick time, Shawn tunes up.

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-15h21m57s190

“Derp.”

Like the Cerebral Assassin he is, Hunter sidesteps the danger, and gives Shawn a backbreaker!

The next couple of minutes sees Trips completely bitch out Shawn. Focusing on the back, Triple H throws Shawn into turnbuckles like a little child. To add insult to injury, Hunter tells Shawn to “SUCK IT” then kicks him back down. The heat for this part was incredible!

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-15h26m41s220

Triple H zones in even further on the back, with multiple elbow drops on the area, maybe even hitting the plate surgically embedded in there. This gets a near-fall, and this prompts The Game to get a chair.

Hunter doesn’t give Shawn’s back one moment to rest. Like Jason Giambi, Hunter swings for the fences with the chair.

After almost getting pinned again, Shawn tries to fight his way out of this predicament, adding in a near-fall of his own! Hunter quickly resumes control with a face-buster.

Despite the objections of referee Earl Hebner, Hunter DDT’s Shawn onto a chair for a near-fall. Oh lookie, BLOOD!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-11h57m56s56

Shawn’s been busted open, with just enough blood to look like a crayon was coloring outside the lines.

Hunter pretends he’s a daddy with a score to settle, so he takes off HBK’s own belt and whips him like a government mule! Creatively, Hunter wraps that belt around his fist so when he decks out Shawn, the buckle is striking the cut! BRUTAL!

Shawn attempts to get to a vertical base while Hunter is looking outside the ring area for something.

That something would turn out to be your friend and mine, MR. SLEDGIE!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-11h59m46s128

Earl tries to stop it, but Shawn has the whereto to get out of trouble. Hunter quickly gets back his momentum into an abdominal stretch. Tsk tsk, we got a rest-hold!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h00m13s154

Hunter grabs the rope for additional leverage, which makes Hebner seethe. I mean, Hebner gets into Hunter’s face, pushing him around showing whose boss!
vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h53m24s100

“BIGGER DERP!”

The confrontation allows Shawn to try to get some groove back. Instead, Hunter positions Shawn for a superplex. Shawn may have pushed Triple H off, but Hunter pushes Hebner into the ropes, which in turn crotches Michaels.

Michaels loses some balance and winds up in the ‘tree of woe’ position. This allows Triple H, with the chair in hand, to get another free shot in on Michaels! Once again, that back shot is the equivalent of a Major Leaguer getting a home run deep into the stands!

Hunter sets up the chair middle of the ring, and delivers yet another backbreaker to Shawn! This time, the sitting portion of the chair is more mangled than a victim of Dr. Hannibal Lecter!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h04m07s185

After another failed series of near-falls, Hunter stomps down the chair, and gives his old buddy a sidewalk slam on the steel apparatus! ANOTHER mini-series of near-falls ensues!

Hunter’s yelling at Shawn to STAY DOWN! Frustrated at his inability to put him away, Game puts the chair down again. Potential Pedigree coming up, but the only thing that happens is a low-blow from Shawn straight to Hunter’s Netherlands!

Once again, Shawn is trying to gain some momentum. Only Hunter’s got that chair again. Will it connect?

It did connect, but not in the way nature intended! Shawn managed to kick that chair back into Hunter’s face! What’s the result?

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h52m37s69

Ughhh…..

More crimson than red ink on a failed test!

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-15h52m20s254

Shawn is finally turning the tide! The elbow to the face followed by a kip-up ensues, and this crowd on Long Island is ESTATIC! After a back body drop, Shawn winds up the chair for some Sweet Skull Music! THAT HIT WITH A BULLET!

After getting whipped over the ropes, Hunter is now getting what is due to him. Some lid shots, some belt shots, it feels like a little bit of everything!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h54m14s58

As Shawn is raping Triple H of his dignity (or whatever he may have had left), the crowd is chanting for TABLES! Keep in mind there are mini rivulets of blood all over the ringside area!

Michael Cole and Tazz make a go for it after Shawn whacks Triple H so hard in the head with the lid that Hunter goes flying! Hugo “kindly” lets Shawn take his boot for another dose of cranial carnage. I tell you what, Shawn’s racking up the fines in Wellness isn’t he?

“A heel for a heel!” Nice work King!

Hunter tries to get up only to get a nasty-looking Bulldog on the bottom half of the steel steps! GNARLY!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h54m24s182

Okay, this just got real: Shawn pulls out the LADDER! We’ve had chairs, garbage cans, and belts up to this point, but now we’ve got the big time piece of metal that made HBK famous!

Triple H met the ladder in person as HBK rammed it into his head!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h54m56s242

After shoving the ladder deep into the solar plexus of The Game, Shawn then successfully catapulted Hunter right into it! Since he was busted open, the only thing that’s being assassinated is Triple H’s blood supply! As this point, Gordon Solie would salute from the grave saying that this is indeed a crimson mask!

Lawler made a note on commentary that Hunter would never have imagined being massacred like he is against Shawn. See kids, this was when King made valid and astute comments on commentary!

After failing a near-fall, Shawn tried to get that ladder into the ring. He failed again as Hunter had the synapses to do a baseball slide.  As HBK lies hurt to the outside, Hunter’s face is telling a story, with little drops of blood going to the mat.

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h08m03s233

Hunter got some free shots in and tried to go upstairs. Shawn however met up with him and delivered a superplex! Shawn covered Hunter to a 2, and then met a high knee courtesy of Hunter channeling Harley Race.

With conclusion in his sights, Hunter gets the top half of the steel steps chucked away from earlier. It looks like a free shot, but instead, Shawn delivers a drop-toe-hold to Hunter on the steps! YIKES!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h42m50s57

Both men get up and Shawn clotheslines Hunter right over the top, onto the ladder! Hunter’s left knee got jammed in the ladder while the right one caught a metal edge. I’m sure he’s thankful he got knee pads!

Finally, Shawn unveils the table from under the ring! While setting it up, he takes down Hunter with one punch. Although H would get right back up, he was then met with a fire extinguisher. Gee, he lands on the table.

HBK rolls back in the ring.

HBK climbs the top rope!

HBK LOOKS ARROGANT!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h43m34s46

HBK TAKES FLIGHT!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h43m47s173

TOUCHDOWN!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h43m53s226

Jim Ross says something very true here. If this was a Falls Count Anywhere match, the bout would have ended right here! The crowd was LOUD, and the carnage was poetic justice. But no, the show must go on!

Shawn slowly gets the ladder in the ring, and Hunter just as slowly rolls into the ring himself. HBK sets that ladder up, and climbs up it!

Mouthing, “I love each and every one of you,” he elbows The Game from the top!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h46m38s88

Instead of being down though, it gives Shawn a big jolt of adrenaline.

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-12h46m49s208

The crowd is calling for it, and the commentators are calling for it.

SWEET…CHIN…MUSIC!

Shawn tunes up the band (which I might add might be measured in sixteenth notes), gets sidestepped into a Pedigree, but Shawn counters out into a pinning predicament!

1

2

3!

BAH GAWD SHAWN HAS DONE IT! THE FANS HAVE THROWN THEIR ARMS UP! JIM ROSS IS NECK-FATTING LIKE CRAZY! LAWLER’S SPAZZING OUT LIKE A GIRL!

Howard announces Shawn as the victor as Shawn gives Earl a little kiss on the forehead.

vlcsnap-2012-05-25-09h38m54s199

There is a little bit of irony here: The picture of Shawn before WrestleMania XIV was an image taken after he said his match was for Earl. Hebner had a brain aneurysm just before the big show, and was laid up for a while. While Hebner should have ref’ed what could have been Shawn’s last match, he instead refs the first match Shawn would have from the comeback!

As HBK has his hand raised, he simultaneously gets another kiss: from a sledgehammer!

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h55m48s242

Hunter, with his face still caked in blood, goes into unholy evil mode with the sledge. Taking liberties, he delivers a parting blow to his fallen foe.

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h56m03s151

The scene of a still very-well-bloodied Hunter laughing after Shawn is put on a stretcher is some of the most horrifying imagery in WWE history.

vlcsnap-2012-05-26-09h56m25s119

It’s a Pyrrhic victory for Shawn, and a redemption spell for The Game.

While they would fight again, and with bigger stakes in tow, this is the one match that truly defines their feud.

Shawn Michaels in his autobiography admitted this match should have been with Vince McMahon. The implication being that Shawn was going to avenge his injuries, and the injuries done to all of his friends (like Steve Austin, Triple H, Kevin Nash, amongst others). Vince would be the slave-driving boss while Shawn would be the savior.

Instead, Hunter wanted the match with Shawn, and the rest is history.

Shawn and Hunter would feud on-and-off for nearly four years. Ironically, they would reunite to take down the one man who originally should have faced Shawn in the first place. Also, the man who would be Hunter’s real-life father-in-law!

Instead of wrapping this up, think of it as a new beginning. Here’s to 20,000 more (actually, 40K as of this revision) views and another year of great things to come!

Bad Booking’s Blog 1 Year Down Post

I can’t believe it’s been a year already.

Approximately one year ago, this blog was hatched out of desperation.

Unemployment is a bitch people.

A hairy, ugly, slanted, depressing bitch.

Make a wish. Take a bite!”

At that point, I was accruing debt quickly.  While I was putting in applications everywhere I could, nothing was coming through. Call back after call back, all I got was either, “We’ll be with you shortly,” or, “Sorry you’re not qualified for this position.”

Depression was quickly setting in. One thing did save me as I had imagination and wanted to write stuff.

Thus this blog was born.

Originally just that, a way to cure depression, it’s primary purpose was supposed to be an eclectic mix of odds and ends making for entertaining pieces.

Top ten song lists on the likes of ‘Weird Al’ and Billy Joel were what got me the most views at first.

That initial ‘Weird Al’ bitty was popular enough where the album reviews were spun off. Heck, I even made a sub-page for them on the top!

Another piece that got attention early was the Blu-ray guide. Thought up because of a forum I frequent, BD (as in short for Blu-ray Disc) is still a confusing medium. The purpose of that dialogue was to educate people on the format without going over their heads. While I know I screwed up on some things and corrected most of them, it is refreshing to post that piece somewhere and a person appreciates your effort.

Speaking of appreciation, this is what leads me to wrestling, namely the WWE.

After starting a badly botched ‘Challenge’ page, there were posts made about various topics like the TV content, a certain wrestler becoming #1 in the PWI list, and multiple countdowns on matches of different varieties/eras.

The traffic really started to racket much to my surprise. I was lucky to get 10 views in a week, but now its upwards of 200 views a week consistently, with spikes not withstanding. Now you know why I steered so swiftly off the original path.

Speaking of spikes (no not the horrible channel), two pieces in particular really got people reading.

A post made on WWE’s PG actually spread to other forums, and they got them debating. What’s more affirming is that people read it, and realized it wasn’t the same old only-complaints that had been the norm for quite some time. A refreshing view on things is always appreciated, and that was my goal. Some counterpoints notwithstanding, mission accomplished!

Also, a countdown list I made on the best 1990’s matches made some people water. Apparently every match was agreeable to a point, and it was the second post to reach individually over 1,000 unique views (after the PG one).

Lately however, my creative juices have been slowed due to steady high production at work. It’s not so much that I get home late every night (to be honest I get home late 2 days a week and early 3 days), but I throw myself so hard at what I do that sometimes this blog will be getting dust while I try to recover and do the grind again.

Even with infrequent posts, I’m happy that this blog still gets regular visits, and I’m still getting comments on things I forgot I wrote about! It’s cool to think with a keyboard and an imagination, you could potentially influence one’s view on a subject. Even on a rant, it’s easy to see people agreeing or disagreeing depending on bias or affiliation.

It’s been a blast over the last year, and it’s been a blessing in disguise. There’s been a lot of words written, a lot of different topics discussed, and a lot of different opinions on certain ideas. In the end, it’s a great thing about a blog: at least people are reading. I also want to thank Freakin’ Awesome Network for giving me consistent traffic and talkback in the last year!

YES YES YES! The 1992 Royal Rumble Match

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Rumble, and the 20th Anniversary of this particular match, let’s go back in time and review the singular greatest Rumble match in history!

As 1992 dawned, the WWE Championship was embroiled in controversy.

Back at the Survivor Series in November, the Undertaker defeated Hulk Hogan to win the belt after interference from Ric Flair.

Fast-forward nearly a week and the one-off event known as ‘This Tuesday in Texas’. Undertaker defended the title against Hulkster, and lost it in means just as controversial as the first go-round.

To paraphrase Owen Hart through the spirit of Jack Tunney, “(Furthermore) ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, AND IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE!”

The ‘Esteemed’ President of the World Wrestling Federation did something that has only occurred once in WWE history, and only under his watch.

Instead of making a tournament, or a regular match to see who the next champ would be, he instead put it on the line as the stipulation for the Royal Rumble match.

Looking at the field, it’s certainly star-studded. Only Vince McMahon though knew how to make this more epic, via this video package:

THE UNDERRRRRTAKERRRRRR!

Before the match gets praised to no end, let’s not forget that by this point in time, there was no gentile format struck down.

Only the 1991 Rumble winner, that being Hogan, would go on to face the champion. 1990 was won by the champion (Hogan), 1989 was won by a one-off appearance (Big John Studd), and 1988 was won by a mid-carder was popularity was skyrocketed by a ‘patriot’ gimmick (‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan).

vlcsnap-5417404

With this mind, let’s go to the formerly-known-as Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York as the Rumble is about to get underway!

vlcsnap-5303174

As tradition, Howard Finkel goes into ‘epic God mode’ and announces the rules for the Rumble match. As per the norm, two men start the match, new entrants in every two minutes, only way to go is over the top both feet touching the floor, yada yada.

Bobby Heenan, who has vested interest in Ric Flair, is as nervous as a daddy waiting for a newborn. If you’re reading this while watching the match for the first time, be aware than Heenan’s commentary is amongst the funniest soundtracks ever recorded in the history of professional wrestling.

vlcsnap-5324089

Before Howard Finkel can announce #’s 1 & 2, he first introduces Jack Tunney to a chorus of boos. Given how Johnny Ace snapped last Monday on RAW, I’m surprised Tunney didn’t lash out with a sequence of ‘FURTHERMORES’. As you can tell, this is the man’s premiere catchphrase. “May the best man win,” is the last retort from the departing Tunney, as impatience from ‘The Weasel’ is looming large.

Now that the old fart is out of the ring, time to see who starts on the pole, ahem, who drew #1!

vlcsnap-5324658

IT’S BRITISH BULLDOG! A favorite in this match because Davey Boy Smith won the battle royal in London a couple of months prior. Only that match had 20 guys, this one has 30!

Who’s next at #2?

vlcsnap-5325972

MILLION DOLLAR MAN! Signified by his maniacal laugh, Ted DiBiase (Sr. that is) is accompanied down by Slutsenational Sherri. Seriously, look at that outfit!

As Ted enters the ring, he wastes no time going after Davey Boy, and this son of a bitch is underway!

In the first two minutes, there is more action than a 20 minute Hulk Hogan match. After a series of suplexes, DiBiase gets a little too cocky, and in a mis-step, he is thrown over the top by the BDS!

With a football-like timer on the lower-left-hand corner, Bulldog is waiting for #3 to come out. Let’s not forget that no one starting in the top five has ever won at this point in Rumble history! So who is it?

#3 IS RIC FLAIR! AND BOBBY HEENAN IS PISSED! Accompanied by Mr. Perfect, Flair goes in and gets dominated by the man across the pond.

#4 arrives in quick order, and accompanied by ‘Mouth of the South’ Jimmy Hart, it’s Nasty Boy Saggs! The two heels gang up on hero Davey Boy. After getting himself out of a jam, Saggs didn’t learn from DiBiase’s mistake of being cocky, and was dropkicked out of the match! Two guys out already, and its back to Flair/Smith. At this point, Heenan yells out that iconic line, “IT’S NOT FAIR TO FLAIR,” multiple times.

#5 comes out in the form of Haku. By a lot of accounts from past wrestlers, maybe the world’s toughest son of a bitch living! The big guy immediately goes after Davey, and soon enough, there’s yet another round of Double-Team. And no, I didn’t mean the Dennis Rodman movie. Haku turns on Flair in short order, which allows Ric to slide under the bottom rope momentarily. Smith gets a wicked piledriver for his efforts from Haku while Flair works on the goliath! “WHERE’S PERFECT,”  quips Heenan. “YOU KNOW THEY’RE NOT ALLOWED AT RINGSIDE?” “HE’S NOT A MANAGER, HE’S AN EXECUTIVE CONSULTANT!” “SAME THING, HE’S A PEST!” God damn do I love Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon as a commentating team! Haku is dumped like a bad bag of garbage as #6 is announced.

#6 turns out to be newly-turned-heel Shawn Michaels! Greeted to boos, you might recall Michaels threw ex-partner Marty Jannetty through the ‘Barbershop’ window. Immediately, Michaels leaves an impression. Beating up Flair, he even nails a superkick mid-ring! Showing signs of what’s to come, Michaels nearly gets eliminated by Bulldog, but an arm gets caught in the ropes! Out from being tangled, Bulldog receives an order of Crescent Kick (that’s what it was called at the time). Michaels botches a Flair maneuver, and his balls get a ride on the ropes for the trouble!

vlcsnap-5474723

#7 comes out to ‘El Matador’ Tito Santana! Hard to believe he's only the second good guy to enter thus far! Also hard to believe what a racist gimmick this was! Flair and Bulldog are resting while the future Wrestlemania VIII combatants Michaels and Santana go toe-to-toe. This portion of the match has all four men doing something, so calling it will be difficult. Heenan claims he’d low-blow his grandmother to win the title! Bah gawd he would!

#8 turns out to be hoss Barbarian! That lug would whoop some ass, but all in the middle of some great action. The heel tandem of Barbarian and Flair try to get Bulldog over the top. This has to be like what, the fifth time DBS has been double-teamed thus far?  Multiple elimination attempts occur by the time #9 comes on down.

#9 is the opposite of a New York Winter. As a matter of act, it’s Texas Tornado Kerry Von Erich! As if it was mid-80s NWA, Flair is the target for Von Erich! Shawn gets sling-shot into the ropes, and clotheslined back down by Davey. Heenan thinks of a brilliant idea: the next person to come down should carry a crescent wrench and whack everyone with it!

vlcsnap-5475433

#10 is announced, and the most natural gimmick to be WWE Champion has to be Repo Man Barry Darsow! A creeper, Repo takes his dear sweet time entering the ring, which pisses Monsoon off to no end. At this point, there are seven, count ‘em, SEVEN MEN IN THE RING! By the time all the action is covered, there’s another man about to hit the ring!

#11 is another NWA representative from back then, and it’s Greg ‘the Hammer’ Valentine! The smoke-house Indian-looking scruff comes in and cleans up shop! Repo gets his nards repossessed by a Flair low-blow, while Monsoon keeps nagging to Heenan about how no one who drew #’s 1-5 ever won the event.

#12 comes out in short-order, and it’s Nikolai Volkoff. Surprisingly booed, but still slapping hands, the barrel-chested Lithuanian intends on making a mark. The ring must have dozens of marks in it, in addition to the thousands of marks in attendance. Somewhere in the action, Hammer proceeds to slap a Figure-Four on Flair! Not an imitation because Hammer used that move as a finisher too! Repo eliminates Volkoff, and Volkoff is thus far the first good guy eliminated, and the first guy eliminated in quite a while.

vlcsnap-5537912

#13 promises to bring law and order to the Rumble via Cobb County’s own Big Boss Man! The fat guy (as opposed to the slimmer 1999 variant of Ray Traylor, RIP) runs on down to enter the fracas. Valentine is quietly eliminated, as now only five men have been eliminated. Still eight men in the ring surprisingly! Repo has his title shot taken away after being eliminated, just shortly after saving Shawn’s ass from being gone himself. Noticing Flair’s in trouble, Heenan threatens to go down to ringside, but Monsoon holds him back. As Monsoon was noticing how long Flair and Bulldog were in the match, BULLDOG IS GONE! Some 25 or so minutes for the Englishman, a good effort gone to naut. Flair goes on a small roll as directly after he eliminates Bulldog, he body-drops Von Erich over the top! After a while of everyone being in the ring, the fray is getting smaller and smaller.

#14 delivers a man whose “Herculean” physique is getting softer. Yes, it is Hercules Hernandez! After beating on Flair, Hercules does his own thing while Barbarian gets his shots in on Naitch. Barbarian tries to eliminate Flair, but was ousted by Hercules instead, who in turn gets eliminated by Boss Man, whose force is so great he almost eliminates himself! WHEW! Boss Man is wagging his finger at Flair as the two brawl their way through some time. On a reversal, Boss Man hurls his body to try to eliminate Flair, but Flair does a side-step, and Boss Man is eliminated! Only Flair in the ring, and belly-flops in celebration/breather. Now we have a count! 3-2-1...

vlcsnap-5538788

#15 IS ROWDY, RODDY, PIPER! Heenan sounds like as if his kid is being taken away by Protective Services. Piper, who is the newly-crowned Intercontinental Champion via defeating The Mountie, immediately goes to Flair and beats the crap out of him. The action even spreads to the barricade outside, even if the outside refs are reprimanding both to get back into the squared circle! Piper somehow no-sells a punch on the apron! Flair botches an atomic drop, and gets the poke to the eye for punishment. What is this, a Three Stooges short? Speaking of silly moves, what about the Airplane Spin, followed up by a Sleeper? Only up to this era were these two moves ever considered dangerous. At least Piper could pull them off. As Flair goes to la-la land, the next combatant is counted down.

vlcsnap-5537996

#16 has one of the most endearing Rumble moments ever. For the first and only time in history, both Monsoon and Heenan simultaneously announce, “JAKE, THE SNAKE, ROBERTS.” Playing the pathological asshole role, Roberts sits in the corner while Piper puts Flair to sleep. Flair rests while Snake pounds Piper back in the corner. Shortly after Roddy saves Flair from a DDT, Flair puts Snake in a Figure-Four! All three men take turns beating each other up, while Heenan makes a double-standard about what Piper’s usual attire is. “IT’S NOT A SKIRT, IT’S A KILT! IT’S NOT A KILT, IT’S A SKIRT!” Classic heel mannerisms.

#17 gets one of the biggest pops thus far. The inaugural Rumble winner, Hacksaw Jim Duggan! Monsoon notes how he respects Flair for showing intestinal fortitude, while Heenan quips he and Flair were jobbed for going out #3! Insider term much in kayfabe 1992? Because Duggan and Piper have the same color trunks, it’s almost hard to tell the difference between the two in the ring. Here we go for the next guy out!

#18 is a guy praying for people to get their W-2’s, its Irwin R. Schyster! The Rumble is always known as a taxing event, so IRS is going for the guy who is going to pay the most first. FLAIR! It’s irony I tells ya! Snake and Flair have a meeting of the minds courtesy of Duggan, and Flair belly-flops again!

#19 is coming, and does he have to choke a bitch? It’s Supa-supa-Superfly Jimmy Snuka! While he was prolific a decade ago, Jimmy’s been reduced to barely higher than jobber status by this point. Heenan is so worn out that he doesn’t know what he’s saying anymore, poor guy. I’m surprised Flair didn’t do a blade-job after the headbutt by Snuka. You know the saying about Samoans and their hard-to-crack heads! Hey look at the time...

#20 is zombie Undertaker, accompanied by pedo Paul Bearer. Immediately, everything slows the hell down as the freshest, biggest, baddest guy hits the ring. Hard to think this was ‘Taker’s last PPV as a heel until 1998, and even here, he gets majority pop! The first to feel ‘Taker’s wrath is Snuka, who is known for being the first guy the dead man defeated at Wrestlemania. One hand, over the top, bye bye Superfly. Undertaker then proceeds to choke Flair, low-blow Duggan, and double-team Duggan with IRS. So far, the dead guy looks to be pretty good! Next guy coming up is...

#21 IS A RAVING LUNATIC MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE! Running down the ramp akin to Warrior, Savage is seeking revenge for what Jake Roberts did to him and his wife Elizabeth. Looking for Roberts, he instead got caught by ‘Taker. Seeing Savage is down, Roberts slithers his way back in to do a number on Mach. After missing a clothesline, Randy goes Savage on Snake. Not only does Savage throw Roberts over the top, but he jumps over the top as well! Somehow this doesn’t count as an elimination! Although Undertaker briefly separates Savage from Roberts, it’s not long before the Madness strikes again, and Roberts is jumped in the aisleway! Undertaker throws Savage back in, and applies a creepy looking crossface on the bottom rope. Amidst all this clusteraction...

vlcsnap-5538253

#22 is Berzerker, accompanied by a Mr. Fuji who can’t walk worth a damn, which is sad and sympathetic. Randy Savage is almost suplexed over the top rope, but blocks it, and brings back Flair into the ring the hard way. Piper and ‘Taker simul-choke Flair, until ‘Taker puts that meaty paw on Piper!

#23 is Leaping...Virgil? Seriously, the guy went from the curtain to the ramp in record time, making Savage look like a grandpa. Heenan then accused Virgil of going through everyone’s bags in the back. “WILL YOU STOP?” Everyone currently in the ring is attacking each other as #24 is coming down.

#24 by the way is Colonel Mustafa being led down by General Adnan. Not related to Simba, instead Mustafa is the Iron Shiek, rebadged with an Iraqi gimmick. Couple of funny things here while the action is slowed a tad. #1 that Gorilla Monsoon couldn’t believe Flair is still standing, even though Flair is the king of 60 minute matches. #2, they take a wide pan of the arena, and Heenan notes no one is at the concession stand, while people are getting up to get said concessions! Flair is on his way to certain elimination when the buzzer strikes.

#25 is ‘The Model’ Rick Martel, the at-the-time holder of longest run in a Royal Rumble at some 53 minutes. Seems like this will be a sprint for him! General Adnan is nonchalantly eliminated as Undertaker goes back to choke Savage. Three people try to lift Flair over the top, but Nature Boy stays in there with pride and purpose. Monsoon is making quick notes about how Piper could be very well a dual-champion as we have a countdown...

vlcsnap-5448053

#26 IS HULK HOGAN! The pops you hear are canned in as apparently the live audience was more mixed than a fudge swirl in vanilla ice cream. Visually, there are quite a few Knickerbockers who are giving the ‘Immortal’ one the thumbs down. Hogan is whooping ass then gets his ass whooped in short order. Hulk after that eliminates Undertaker, which draws ire from the dead man up the ramp. The viking tries to derail Hogan’s momentum, but a short removal of the bandanna leads to Berzerker’s elimination via body-drop! Virgil and Hacksaw are simultaneously eliminated.

#27 is the jobber Alligator Man Skinner! Fresh off his classic with Bret Hart the month before at TiT (that’s Tuesday in Texas), the guy goes towards Piper. IRS saves Flair from Hogan, all the while IRS gets choke-swinged by the torn t-shirt of Hogan. Piper tried to do the Mike Tyson (aka biting the ear) on Flair, but couldn’t sustain it for very long.

#28 is Sgt. Slaughter, who if you may recall at last year’s Rumble, won the WWE Championship from Ultimate Warrior. This year, as a face, he gets cheered to the ring. The Alligator Man couldn’t “skin the cat”, and thus was eliminated. Monsoon officially declares Flair as the longest-entrant ever at 55+ minutes (to this point) while Flair is staving off another attempt at elimination. While action is going on all over the place, the buzzer is ringing again!

vlcsnap-5539072

#29 is SID JUSTICE, who gets the biggest pop of anyone in this Rumble. He almost eliminates IRS, but instead it nearly gets turned into an audit. Meanwhile, Flair is punching Hogan who is held by IRS. which astonishes Gorilla. Sid reverses a hammerlock by Flair as #30 is finally going to make his appearance!

#30 is indeed Warlord (w/ Harvey Whippleman), and that’s the last call! A neat overhead shot shows Flair on the top rope, but Hogan press-slams him over. Typical Flair spot. Out of the ring, but both under the bottom rope, Hogan successfully suplexes Flair on the mat! Sgt. Slaughter takes a wild shot into the steel post, and sayonara to the Sarge! After sustaining a big boot, Flair gets up and Monsoon officially states he’s been in there for an hour! While Hogan gets chopped into “God mode”, IRS is quietly eliminated by Piper. Hogan and Sid team up to take out Warlord. Sid, on a hot streak, eliminates both Roddy Piper and Rick Martel!

That means we’re down to the final four. Hogan. Sid. Flair. Savage. All four with impressive credentials, and all four with a license to maim. Savage is quickly eliminated by Sid. Hogan and Flair trade chops back to the ropes, where Flair is hanging on by a thread. Hogan loses the leverage game as Sid lifts him over!

vlcsnap-5469467

As Hogan is on the outside, he yanks Sid by the hands, and with an assist from Flair, Sid goes over!

FLAIR WINS!

FLAIR WINS!

FLAIR WINS!

Bobby Heenan just passed an orgasm, and Gorilla Monsoon is in shock.

vlcsnap-5470067

Flair gets out of Hogan’s jealous dodge, while Sid comes up and wants to brawl!

vlcsnap-5470287

Flair and Perfect are all smiles as the Undisputed WWE Champion is about to be given the belt in a post-match interview.

vlcsnap-5473774

“I’m going to tell you all with a tear in my eye- this is the greatest moment in my life. This championship makes you number one!”

That quote not only put WWE over, but buried WCW to no end. After a hellacious 1991 WCW run, Flair went to the WWE in search of a new beginning. After the ‘Real World’s Champion’ gimmick that played out with blurred out belts, Flair was given this chance in the 1992 Royal Rumble, and he added a second definition to the term ‘60 Minute Man’.

IN CONCLUSION: The greatest Rumble match ever. Bar none.

Ric Flair even said himself in his first DVD collection that this was the greatest talent pool in WWE history. An eclectic mixture of styles, gimmicks, and philosophies, there is not a Rumble match that could exceed this. 2004 was close, VERY close, but no cigar.

Looking at some of the combatants, there were some stand-out performances. Flair notwithstanding, some of the best performers in the best were Davey Boy Smith, Shawn Michaels, Jake Roberts, Randy Savage, and for what it is worth, IRS. As a matter of fact, almost everyone in this match came out looking better than they did before. Except Hogan that is.

For a one-off title match, this was extraordinary. Hardly a filler spot to be had, and every man in there looked important. This is the sort of booking that WWE needs to view again.  A ***** classic is there ever was one.
