Bad Booking’s Top 10 Elevating Moments of Steve Austin

What can be said about a man whose career has been summed up in so many ways?

Steve Williams, who was pretty much forced to change his name to Austin as to not conflict with “Dr. Death”, went up the ranks the “hard way” (that means territories kids), and earned respect en route to being the highest grossest superstar WWE has ever had.

Amongst his many DVDs, coming out November 29th will be the grand-daddy of them all. Entitled “Stone Cold Steve Austin: The Bottom Line of the Most Popular Superstar of All Time”, it’s a stacked deck featuring hours upon hours of rattlesnake-brewed goodness, topped off with a brand-new documentary that accounts for the man’s life. The DVD version is 4-discs, while a Blu-ray version has 3 with more hours of content not available on the DVD. Essentially, this a must-own for the holiday season and I can’t stress enough that WWE usually makes documentaries worthy of several re-watches.

That being said, I must note there were certain times in the WWE that shaped Austin into the man we all know as a legend and icon. Today I’m counting them down, but in chronological order. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s the bottom line, because... (well you know)...

1. “AUSTIN 3:16 SAYS I JUST WHOOPED YOUR ASS!”, King of the Ring 1996

It’s elementary to put this on here, but to newer fans, they may not get the full context of this ground-breaking moment.

Starting things off, it wasn’t even supposed to be Austin winning the whole shebang. As a matter of fact, the original winner penciled in was supposed to be Hunter Hearst Helmsley, but was scratched post-Curtain Call. HHH would win it the year later.

Also, it felt like one part of Austin’s career was ending, but another part was just beginning.

Austin’s career was in purgatory for a while, as injuries later in his WCW career forced Bischoff’s hand to fire him. During his “rest period”, as in the time between WCW and WWE, he went to a little promotion, might have heard of it, called ECW. Between outrageous promos and good matches, Austin caught fire as perhaps of the most underrated/un-tapped talents in the wrestling world. Although he started in the WWE as “Ringmaster” with manager Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Belt, he’d soon break away as Chilly McFreeze Stone Cold.

As the old saying goes, “...and the rest is history!”

Stone Cold valiantly battled in the semi-finals and finals of the King of the Ring tournament. After the semi-final matchup with Marc Mero, Austin was forced to go to the hospital to receive stitches after a kick by the Wildman. With a somewhat disfigured mouth, Austin would then defeat Jake Roberts in the finals, and thus win the crown.

The promo that would proceed this was one the WWE would never let it’s fans forget. “Talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16... Austin 3:16 says I just whooped your ass!”

As a heel, this BY FAR got the biggest pop of the night. It signaled a wind of change in the WWE, as the Federation soon made a hot-selling t-shirt, and 3:16 would soon become legendary in the WWE. Amongst many other things.

2. “DON’T COUNT ME DOWN!” RAW, 10/28/96

vlcsnap-1506435

Bret Hart finally appeared on RAW after a six month sabbatical away from television (but not necessarily wrestling as he was booked on overseas tours). The first one to “greet” him so to speak was one Steve Austin.

After some time of taunting and “old man” jokes, it’s made official: Austin, Hart, Survivor Series.

Make no joke, their match at MSG is an underrated classic, as a later match at Wrestlemania would be more memorable and pretty much launch Austin into the stratosphere.

On the buildup however, Austin was launching into his darker side. Crushing Brian Pillman’s ankle on Superstars is one thing, but what he did here was disturbing and hilarious all at the same time.

Hart was at his home via satellite while Austin was in front of a camera either at the arena or WWE Studios, who knows. It sounded like a straight-forward interview until Austin starts flipping the shit.

Of course in production, it’s protocol to segue from one segment to another by giving the subjects at hand a proper countdown silently.

That’s the problem with Austin however: HE DICTATES THE COUNTDOWN!

He became so enraged that he threw a production assistant into a ladder, and smashed equipment on set! This Austin would be closer to 1998 Austin in destruction, but this is definitely a darker edge in the Rattlesnake character.

3. Austin Wins the Rumble (for the first time), Royal Rumble 1997

At this point in the history of the Rumble, only two men started inside the top ten and won the event.

One would be Ric Flair in 1992 from #3, and Shawn Michaels started on the pole (I mean #1) in 1995, plus would win the 1996 Rumble as well.

So for a man like Austin whose credibility was being established, winning this event would be a massive deal.

However, he’s still very much a heel at this point and therefore there MUST be shenanigans afoot!

Oh yes, there will be shenanigans!

Starting fifth, Austin would be the man large and in charge for the duration of the event. Throwing man after man over the top, it seemed elementary Austin would win.

That was until Bret Hart showed up.

The two brawled, and before you know it, #30 would be out.

Now before you say well Austin won the Rumble, let me tell you he didn’t!

What happened was that Terry Funk and Mankind (Mick Foley) were fighting at the ringside area and it brought upon the attention of all the referees. In the confusion, Bret dumped Austin over, but since the refs never saw it, Austin went back in, and dumped Hart along with Vader and Undertaker to win the 1997 Rumble.

This would set the stage for the next moment, one that would literally make the Texas Rattlesnake.

4. A Picture Tells a Thousand Words, Wrestlemania 13 (1997)

To think, Bret should have faced Shawn in an Iron Man REMATCH from the year before for the WWE Championship!

That being said, I must say this match is one of the most influential matches of all time. Not just because it was one of the first ‘Manias I ever saw on tape, but because of the 30 minutes that literally could have been the show itself.

Since October, Bret and Austin have been at each other’s necks. The Monday before Wrestlemania didn’t make things better, as Austin interfered in the cage match, but Undertaker slammed the door in Hart’s face, thus letting Sid to retain the title and let the two big men go at it for the title on the grand stage.

Bret, in a fit of unparalleled rage, threw babyface announcer Vince McMahon down to the canvas and unleashed an uncensored foul tirade the likes one live television audience never saw before.

With both Austin and Hart on the teeter-totter of turning, Wrestlemania 13 undoubtedly was going to be remembered for the Submission Match, which was going to be referred by Ken Shamrock of UFC fame.

For the first 15 minutes or so, it was wild brawling in and out of the ring, but mostly out. On the outside, Bret threw Austin into the guardrail, and busted him wide open. As in, Bret had the blade and busted open Austin for the first time in Austin’s career. If anyone wants to challenge me on this, go read Bret’s autobiography, right here!

Blood was definitely not common in the WWE at the time, and I believe Hart had permission from Vince to get a little color. However, “little” became a “gusher”, as literally the arena would have somewhat of a new paint job courtesy of Austin’s crimson.

The ending saw Austin in the Sharpshooter from Hart, with blood STREAMING down. Close-up shots were particularly nasty as Austin would scream in agony with blood running down into his teeth!

After unsuccessfully trying to counter, Austin “passed out” from the blood loss and pain. Shamrock stopped the match and Hart was named the winner. Hart was pissed he couldn’t get the actual submission, and thus kicked at Austin again. Shamrock threw Hart away, and therefore Bret turned heel officially. Austin however wanted no help, kicked a referee down, and turned face. Definitely a milestone moment in WWE, as they did a double-turn not only successfully, but would ensure the world a new superstar in Austin.

5. Austin Destroys Bret’s Knee to “Obligacry”, RAW 4/21/97

aushar

Bret Hart is rolling with momentum. After a decidedly fresh heel turn in the wake of Wrestlemania 13, he was able to patch up the feuding brother/brother-in-law tag of Owen Hart and Davey Boy Smith to form the Hart Foundation once again.

This will influence the main event of “Revenge of the Taker”. Bret and Austin faced off once again, but Austin would gain the duke after Hart’s cronies ran in. Austin would get the last laugh after slapping on Bret’s sharpshooter on Bret, and thus we have ourselves an evolution of a feud!

To start off this edition of RAW, it was announced that Austin, newly-turned face, would face Undertaker (ultra-mega-over-face) for the WWE Championship at the event “A Cold Day in Hell”. While Austin didn’t sidestep it, he also didn’t waste time to call Bret’s ass to the ring. As a matter of fact, he only gave Bret SIXTY SECONDS to come on down before the Rattlesnake would start to look for him.

Predictably the clock runs out, so Austin raises all sorts of hell trying to find him!

When Austin hits the ring again, Bret actually meets up with him. Hart was smart, and wasn’t truly alone. Davey Boy and Owen jumped him, but Austin wasn’t shaken. As a matter of fact, Austin had an unlikely ally to the whole issue.

SHAWN MICHAELS.

The same man who “faked an injury” to get out of 13, but also the same man whose appeared multiple times on RAW while hurt to add to the show. Austin would take notes on this later.

After Shawn’s chair-wielding antics, Austin had Bret all alone. Austin used a chair to “soften” the knee of Hart, and then slapped on the Sharpshooter for a LONG time. Long enough where Bret had to be loaded into an ambulance post-beatdown!

Of course Bret’s ride wouldn’t be totally peaceful as Austin would jump Bret AGAIN!

Turns out in real life, Bret injured his knee in an overseas tour, and surgery was required. While Bret would have his surgery, he wouldn’t be off the television screens for long. In a wheelchair and/or crutches, Bret would still raise hell to Austin’s hell and would lead to an epic summer.

Oh, did I tell you Brian Pillman would jump Austin by the end of the episode to join the Foundation? Irony isn’t it?

6. Austin “Stampedes” Into Calgary, Canadian Stampede 1997

Remember the epic summer hinted in the prior entry? Well, this match was a culmination of sorts.

Manning the Foundation, we have Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart, “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, and Brian Pillman.

Austin’s team consisted of the Redneck, Goldust, Ken Shamrock, and the Road Warriors Hawk & Animal.

With how the roles flip depending on what border you’re on, the crowd reactions stayed consistently insane.

Canada definitely led the way in terms of audience enjoyment. When the Hart Foundation came out, it was as if God himself came out.

On the other side of the coin when Austin came out, they disemboweled him like Satan. AUSTIN LOVED IT! Kind of akin to when Jim Ross says Mick Foley loves pain.

It was a tremendous brawl in the Saddledome. Ten men, no slowdown, and no let up from the paying audience.

At one point, Owen was “taken out” by Austin, and had to go to the back. Only for Owen to rollup Austin and win the match for his team and a boisterous Canada!

As the Harts celebrated, Austin stirred the shit with the patriarch Stu, matriarch Helen, and assorted siblings in the front row. With the action escalating to the ring, Canada’s finest (and no, not MOUNTIES) put Austin in handcuffs to haul his ass away.

But not before flipping the audience the bird up the ramp... IN HANDCUFFS!

8. BOTCH! Summerslam 1997

The title for this entry comes from this, one of the absolute funniest videos I’ve ever seen from a video game. Go check it out now!

With how the ‘Stampede’ ended, it was announced for Owen and Austin to compete for Owen’s Intercontinental Championship at Summerslam.

Shenanigans ensued, and no one is surprised.

So here we are for Summerslam 1997, the first PPV event held In New Jersey in quite some time.

Austin and Owen were in the penultimate match, given the high-profile status of both men.

It felt like a methodical match for the first 15 or so minutes. While Owen would be technically on the upswing, Austin would brawl out of it. Typical formula but a fine match nonetheless.

Then disaster struck.

Austin came off the ropes, and would then be picked up by Hart to be piledriven ala Undertaker, but Owen landed on his ass instead of his knees. While the immediate severity wasn’t disclosed, it was obvious Austin wasn’t selling in the middle of the ring. He was legit hurt, and very badly.

To kill some time, Owen played to the crowd and told them he was gonna finish him off. Austin though got on his knees long enough to make an awful-looking rollup to win the belt.

In the weeks following his injury, no one knew how severe Austin was hurt because he was always on TV contributing to the best of his ability. This next entry will prove that to its fullest, and bring the flagship RAW program one of its most controversial moments ever!

9. “OH GOD, AUSTIN’S STUNNED MCMAHON!” RAW 9/22/97

stunner

Even without this event taking place, this particular edition of RAW was going to be historic.

For the very first time, RAW emanated from Madison Square Garden, the mecca of WWE. As the arena was literally the home-base for so many years when WWE was a territory, it was surprising it took nearly five years for RAW to hit MSG.

When it did however, the show that happened was as Neil Patrick Harris would say, “Legend....wait for it.... DARY!”

Not only was the IC title tourney heating up (due to Austin’s injury/forfeit), there was also HBK’s issue with Undertaker and Bret Hart, in addition to Cactus Jack debuting in WWE (as opposed to Foley being Mankind previously) as he would defeat Triple H in a Falls Count Anywhere match.

About halfway through however, Austin was about to raise hell. Only problem was that Austin had a restraining order from Owen Hart, and you what that means!

So Owen won his match and was about to dedicate the victory when he got the Pearl Harbor job by Bionic Redneck V1 (as I would like to call it). New York’s finest came in armed and ready when Vince McMahon got up from the table and needed to talk to Austin.

McMahon told Austin he understood that Austin was upset not being able to compete. While being on the program was fine, breaking the law was not.

As Austin told McMahon that he is appreciable that the Federation cares about his physical status, he tells him he can kiss his ass.

STUNNER!

At the time, Austin had Stunner’ed EVERYONE, including Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler, so McMahon was inevitable. No less exciting to see it happen.

As McMahon lay quivering on the canvas, Austin willfully had the cuffs put on him with a somewhat-sinister laugh.

Jim Ross on a later DVD they tried making Austin a premier bad guy in the WWE, but the fans wouldn’t buy it. This was DEFINITELY formidable proof.

10. “TYSON AND AUSTIN!” RAW 1/19/98

The night after the Royal Rumble usually sets the tone for Wrestlemania. This particular year was no different.

With Steve Austin winning the Rumble for a second straight year and a pretty much crippled Shawn Michaels retaining the WWE title in a Casket Match against Undertaker, the clash for ‘Mania would be a blown-knee versus blown-back affair.

However, Vince wanted to spice up the proceedings even further.

Mike Tyson and his posse surrounded the ring, fresh off of appearing at the Rumble in a box suite, with Vince on the stick. As Vince announced who the special guest enforcer would be come Wrestlemania...

...GLASS SHATTERS

“This is Stone Cold’s ring,” a clearly-nasal sounding Jim Ross exclaimed. Austin walked and talked with a purpose down the aisle as he would run in and badmouth Tyson. After some sign language and more badmouthing, the two got into it.

And Jim Ross went neck-fat bat-shit crazy.

“TYSON’S GOT AUSTIN, AUSTIN’S GOT TYSON!”

With Vince yelling, “YOU RUINED IT,” Austin made his point known. For the lead-up to Wrestlemania, Tyson sided with DX. At the end of the main event where Austin won the title, Tyson revealed a 3:16 shirt to side with Rattlesnake. Two of the world’s toughest sons of bitches joining forces was never explained further, but if it was, WWE wouldn’t be a company anymore due to Tyson’s outlandish appearance fees. Hey, a man’s gotta pay forta fi for his hoes!

IN CONCLUSION: On the way to the stars, aka winning the title in 1998, Austin has some pretty awesome moments. While most of these are talked about, there were a couple I think might have been forgotten, like the Stampede and Hart’s knee ones.

Austin’s a man whose career reads like a good story, without most of the bitter side-effects most wrestlers endure. He’s won titles, respect, and more importantly, is the face of an era that could never be duplicated. For that, I salute him with a thumbs up on 3:16! ‘Cause I said so!

Meeting Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart: A Fan’s Dream Come True

Sometimes in life, we all must count our blessings. No matter how bad the “moment” seems to be, the ends justify the means if you keep positive ideas at the forefront.

I am certainly no different. Being unemployed like I was for much of the first half of this year, it seemed like sunny days (unintentional pun, and yes I met her too), were truly few and far between.

Two days in March and April however made me realize that I had the chance to meet people most fans will never get the chance to meet. Two legends that inspired the world in their ring-work, yet captivated it by real-life back stabs and betrayals, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart are truly two of the pinnacles in the WWE.

While I’m somewhat here to promote the new Shawn Michaels Vs Bret Hart DVD coming out soon (and here is the Blu-ray version), I’m also here to recount and relive the days that I got to meet the holy grails in professional wrestling. So sit back and wait on line, just like I did, because the shining light is right on the other side!

Since we’re all on “line” at this point, I would like the time out to give a warm shout-out to the wonderful Northeast Wrestling promotion, based out of Cornwall-on-Hudson in the state of New York. Travelling up and down the east coast, the fed delivers a wonderfully balanced card of up-and-comers, veterans, and even superstars to help raise money for local charities/benefits. It’s an inexpensive way to see the action, but at the same time, truly opens your eyes in what talent lies out in the open. Some wrestlers mentioned in this blog piece are people not known to the national/world stage, but hopefully they may be recognized soon as the talents they are. The main reason why they’re mentioned because this promotion is the brains behind the events. Oh shoot, the line is ending, let’s get cracking!

March 12th, Middletown Galleria, Shawn Michaels:

On this brisk March morning, I woke up like a six year old anticipating that big toy on Christmas morning. All I knew was this: the lines were gonna be exhaustive in their elements, but at the end of the road, lies good ol’ HBK.

The Heartbreak Kid. The Showstopper. The Headliner. AND THE MAIN EVENT!

As one of the biggest influences in my “mark-dom” so to speak, Michaels plays a large role in why I became a fan. I've written about this in length in my prior entries (like here for example).

For this, a March morning where literally a foot of snow melted in a short amount of time, it seemed as if there was a renewed sense of enthusiasm in the Middletown Galleria at Crystal Run parking lot.

With my siblings/their spouses and one of my best friends in the pack, we represented six out of some 3,000 people who came out to see this legend. Not only New Yorkers, but people from all over the country even booked hotels to get a glimpse of this champion!

Waiting on line, a whole bunch of different pathos raged through the mall. There were the wrestling fans decked out in said gear. There were also former fans who appreciated HBK from earlier like, like say New Generation or Attitude eras. In addition, there were fans who came out to see what the hubbub was about.

Northeast Wrestling also uses this as a opportunity to promote their latest shows and have talent on hand. Matt Taven, the VERY talented champion of the organization, was walking around and greeting the fans. Even as the champ, he seemed to be a little kid again with all this ballyhoo about. Having met this guy on multiple occasions, I wished him luck in Newburgh, and even got him to sign a mini-card poster for the event next month! More on that event a little later on.

From the time I got to the Galleria, which was about 9AM, to the time I got to see him, which was closer to noon, it felt like I went through a whole PPV card. The excitement, electricity, and all-around unregulated joy was about to be tapped to their breaking point. What to think, what to say, what to... oh what the hell, HE’S RIGHT FREAKING THERE!

With my copies of From the Vault: Shawn Michaels and Survivor Series 2002 in my hands, it’s time to say hello to a man whose descriptors about him are great in number, yet still pale in comparison to his in-ring achievements.

Oh, and did I tell you this was a birthday present about five months to the early side?

As I was shaking and quaking in my mere presence of this God-like figure, I handed him over the DVD’s to sign. I told him that I’ve got a collection, and those were the first two DVD’s that started it all (like Snow White and Pinocchio were for animated Disney features).

In that gruff yet endearing voice of his, he responded, “I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing!”

A few pictures were snapped (I deserve to be on Botchamania for one of them), and within two literal minutes, it was as if I was somehow complete in life. My #1 biggest idol in wrestling, somehow and someway, was met by yours truly. It will stick with me for all eternity, as dreams in life do come true.

While his name wasn’t mentioned, Shawn’s biggest in-ring adversary was appearing in my backyard the month after! For all the bitterness that seemed to embody Hart for most of the past decade (reasonably so), it seemed like he was reborn in a way too. Let’s see how that turned out, shall we?

April 15th, Newburgh Free Academy High School, Spring Slam, Bret Hart:

Spring Slam is always amongst the wrestling events I attend every year.

Ever since the first one in 2006, NEW always seems to amaze me with the talent they sign from big-name organizations, coupled with their fresh in-house talents who always deliver the goods.

This particular year had two things going for it that made me scream,

The first was a highly anticipated re-match for the NEW Championship. After a highly controversial Dusty Finish at Wrestlefest in Poughkeepsie, Matt Taven once again defends the title against Hale Collins, one half of the famous tag team THE NOW. With it being No DQ’s, anything was sure to erupt. More on that later.

The second was a highly anticipated name heading to Newburgh. With Shawn Michaels the previous month, it seems that NFA had one hell of an act to follow. So why not get the guy’s biggest rival? Bret Hart was advertised, and he came to perhaps one of the bigger events NEW runs every year.

As anticipated, the line for meeting “Hitman” was long. So in the meantime, I look at the atmosphere around me. Of course the event is a fundraiser for the school wrestling team, so all the kids are helping out with refreshments and stuff of that nature. Fans were excited as if WWE came to town. Better yet, Bret wasn’t the only big name there.

Sitted surprisingly close to Hart was Sunny. For those not in the know about one Tammy Sytch, she has had one hell of a decade. Battling body issue and drug problems, add that with conjunction with the freakishly accidental death of her husband Chris Candido, she came out looking HOT! For newer fans, apparently there was a tryst between the two back in the old WWF days. Add in Shawn Michaels, another part of the Sunny clientele back then as well, and suddenly some crap went down. But that’s getting beyond the point.

Also sitted down was the man with a trifecta of gimmick names. He’s the man known as the “homicidal, suicidal, genocidal,” SABU! The man looked to be racked of pain just sitting there, results of bloody scar-inducing wars across the world for the better part of two decades. In any event, I got to take a picture of him (which I stupidly forgot to get, as well as Sunny’s), and while he and my buddy were pointing to the sky with their right arms, I was told to point with my left? Not questioning it though, I don’t want to be Arabian Skullbusted any time soon!

Now to Bret himself. After waiting on line and being perilously close to missing the opening bell, I got to meet the Excellence of Execution. Some wrestlers talk loud, but Hart took the Teddy Roosevelt approach: speak softly, but carry a (figuratively) big stick! I got him to sign the DVD from 2005 which marked Hart’s first collaborated effort with WWE since the Montreal Screwjob in 1997, and his autobiography which feels like a tome of wrestling history. After the signatures, he asked me and my buddy what our favorite match of his was. In a near simultaneous moment, we answered the Austin match from Wrestlemania 13, the submission one (By the way, the new Austin DVD has that match WITH COMMENTARY FROM AUSTIN AND JIM ROSS, so pre-order that sum bitch right here won’t ya?). Smiling like a Cheshire cat, he noted that is his favorite match too. Very easy to see why, I wrote about it my 90’s match list.

Back to the event. Hart’s promo was pretty much standard in the ring. He called out Hale Collins, and pretty much gave him his well-wishes on his title match.

Speaking of Collins, he was walking down the aisle for the match when Taven jumped him. Gorilla Monsoon would definitely call that a Pearl Harbor, as Collins would have the living crap beat out of him for the next 15 minutes. Circumstances lead Collins to getting Taven into a pinning predicament, and then Vik Dalishus came out.

After being in a hellacious tables match with sure signs of a concussion, Dalishus post-match was getting the crowd riled up with “LET’S GO HALE!”. That was then.

This was NOW. Vik came down with a chair, and BUSTED HALE IN THE HEAD WITH IT! This allows Matt to get the win, and Vik to beat down Hale a little more, before Hale came to and a WILD brawl ensued, leading to most of the NEW locker room to clear and separate the two. Not only was this the break-up no one wished would happen, but nothing like that to the best of my knowledge happened in NEW before, and I know for certain it will make sales for Autumn Ambush in October.

And you want to know the ironic thing about the matchup for AA? Bret Hart’s the enforcer for the grudge match, so he’ll be in my neck of the woods once again. And so is Kevin Nash...

IN CONCLUSION: Sometimes in life, we all must count our blessings. No matter how bad the “moment” seems to be, the ends justify the means if you keep positive ideas at the forefront.

Meeting Shawn and Bret, two of the greatest of all time, was a pipe dream not too long ago. Although the two had bitter feelings towards one another for the longest time, they reconciled to the point where Bret actually considers Shawn a friend. A huge difference from the epilogue from Hart’s autobiography!

As you can see above, there’s a new DVD/Blu-ray coming out in October with their rivalry front and center. In an intimate sit-down with Jim Ross, HBK and Hitman discussed their lives, their tag teams, their matches, Montreal, amongst other topics. Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene Post

(Hurricane Advisory as of this post, in red.)tsi

As you very well know, or may not because you’ve lived under a rock, there is a major hurricane battering it’s way onto the eastern seaboard of the United States.

The bitch in question is Irene.

Landing in the US on Thursday, the storm packed initial winds of 120+ mile per hour strength, and has caused havoc wherever it went.

This blogger lives in a portion of New York State where while it won’t be hit as bad as New York City or New Jersey, 60 mile per hour sustained winds are no laughing matter either.

As a matter of fact, 60 is the magic number for ALL major bridges/tunnels to be CLOSED in the state for sustained winds.

Ever since the coverage of the event started on Wednesday, unprecedented measures have been taken to ensure the safety of residents and buildings of the about-to-be affected areas.

While for some folks in the South where these massive storms are a way of life, NYC hasn’t been directly hit by a hurricane since 1938!

In a historic response to the sea-faring storm, Governors Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie, of New York and New Jersey respectively, have both declared STATE OF EMERGENCY for their state. Usually relegated to major snowstorms, this is the first time in my lifetime this is happened for a rain equivalent.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg of NYC forced Zone A (aka, low level areas susceptible to flooding) residents, as well as hospitals and senior living centers in that area, to evacuate ASAP. Christie did the same thing for the people near the Jersey Shore and Atlantic City.

So to recap, essentially all hell is going to break loose either today (as this blog is published), or tomorrow depending on the locale. I know some people have already been directly hit by the storm.

I pray for them.

I know some friends who are living in Jersey or in New York City, and thus are forced to leave their homes.

I pray for them.

Worse yet, I have family who lives in NYC, Long Island, and well, scattered all over NYS for that matter.

No matter the severity, I’ll always pray for them.

Hopefully when I wake up Monday morning, nothing would have been lost and everything will return to normal. I know that goes the same for MILLIONS of people on the coast. With that in mind, be safe and take care of yourself, and each other.

Great Moments in TV History: Chappelle’s Show

Clayton Bigsby: Blind, Black, White Supremacist

To further branch out what this blog offers, I am going through some shows of years gone by and posting some pretty damn epic moments.

In this inaugural edition, I’m going to discuss a segment that was featured in a first episode! Even though this show would have MANY more glass-shattering moments, this one is the thesis for what would redefine the word “controversial”.

For the uninitiated/people who didn’t bother to catch it during it’s original run, let me give you a low-down. Chappelle’s Show debuted on Comedy Central on January 22nd, 2003 to a surprisingly uproarious reaction.

To this point in time, only one show defined that network.

No, not that one. It’s about the four kids in the small Colorado town. It’s actually still on today!

Anyways, this show was inauspicious. It featured Dave Chappelle, a funny man who primarily has had small roles in many projects, doing sketches.

In the first episode, there was a car commercial with a “bleeper” (as in wardrobe malfunction of Mrs. Tits McGee), a infomercial for Pop Copy (a crappy computer store, quite literally), Nat King Cole’s Christmas Album, and the home stenographer used to record conversations “conveniently”. So far so good, this show has promise.

However, the sketch about to come up next would shake up the whole universe as we know it, and re-write the rules of racial humor. This, my friends, is the tale of a bigot whose a photo negative of what he believes in.

For the rest of the review, I’m posting these two screen caps as a warning.

That’s a first shot. If you don’t like politically incorrect language or are easily offended by it, turn back now because it will NOT get any better!

vlcsnap-37780

Hosted by Kent Wallace (that’s how he signed off as), it’s primarily a news show akin to Nightline and 60 Minutes.

The main story just so happens to be a man by the name of Clayton Bigsby. A hermit of a man whose racial rhetoric is infamous, he’s an author whose books have combined a total rake of 600K+ sales.

When faced with the task of actually getting to the locale of said Mr. Bigsby, Wallace encounters a not-so-friendly town with lots of racial tension and beautiful scenery.

Accompanied with a white wife of similar visual disability...

vlcsnap-65488

...Bigsby is rocking in a chair on his front porch. Wallace is bewildered at the sight of how a blind black man could be a white supremacist of the highest order.

Like any good reporter, Wallace must get down to how the belief system started, so he goes to the “home” where Bigsby was raised.

vlcsnap-39284

At the Wexler Home for the Blind, Wallace interviews the head mistress Bridgett. Her motive was that it would be easier to tell Clayton and all the other kids that Clayton is white.

vlcsnap-39435One of these things just doesn’t belong here...

Meanwhile, back near the bayou, Clayton clarifies that SIX books were written but only FOUR were published. When asked about the purpose of his works, Clayton comes up with how all the other races (like Chinese people and Arabs) STINK! In conjunction with this, Wallace asks Bigsby about his beliefs on African American people. Bigsby responds with various stereotypes, up to and including having big butts and “...breathing all the white man’s air.” Unlike some other sketches later in the series, I don’t think the audience reaction was piped in!

Apparently this rant takes so long, the camera crew has to film the two men walking on a bridge! Clayton ends this part of the interview with a twistingly uncomfortable anecdote about a friend from years gone by. “IF ANYONE’S GONNA HAVE SEX WITH MY SISTER, IT’S GONNA BE ME!”

Allowing the audience to breathe, Wallace and Bigsby get into a alabaster-style pickup truck and go on to a gas station en route to a rally.

vlcsnap-40721

Jasper, one of Bigsby’s dearest friends, explains to Wallace that he couldn’t tell Bigsby he’s black because he’s too important to the movement (alas, there’d be one less nigger around). While overwhelmed at the irony, Kent notices Clayton’s in trouble.

vlcsnap-41067

Some rednecks are making fun of Bigsby and his “race”. In a reversal of fortune, Clayton yells to “GET THAT NIGGER” while he’s somehow able to leave unscathed. “WHITE POWER!”

This “confusion” doesn’t end there. Two wiggers in a Mustang are playing hip hop way too loud, and Bigsby lets them know it by calling them niggers. The reaction by the crackers?

vlcsnap-41525He called us niggers? AWESOME!

At the rally, I mean “book signing”...

vlcsnap-41716

(typical Southern racist crowd)

...Bigsby is given a God-like entrance. Complete with KKK getup, Bigsby has important things to say. However, members of the audience are calling for the man to reveal himself. So Bigsby obliges though Jasper knows full well what could happen.

vlcsnap-42006

A shockwave goes through the audience worse than a earthquake in a third-world country.

vlcsnap-42432This poor lady is corpsing! Send for the man! That’s much better!

The shock was so great, a guy’s head EXPLODED like dynamite in a haystack.

vlcsnap-42164

Blood spread so far that splats were featured on the bigot’s books.

vlcsnap-42537

Wallace ends the portion of the show by saying that the reputation of Bigsby has been irrevocably harmed, although his physical presence wasn’t. While it was acknowledged that Bigsby has come to grips that he is a black man, he divorced his wife of 19 years because she’s a “nigger lover”. If that is not a punch-line, then I don’t know what is!

IN CONCLUSION:  For any series, their first episode should provide a glimpse of what their show promises to be.

In this one sketch, Dave Chappelle managed to turn comedy as we knew it on it’s head.

While more segments from this series will be featured, it is important to note that this landmark show only lasted two whole seasons with a bastardized third. In a short time, no other show has as much a cultural impact as this one did. Hopefully, this sketch outlined the reason why.

Bad Booking’s “Dream” Match: D-Generation X vs. Brothers of Destruction

We all know what happened at WrestleMania 26. In the biggest rematch of all time (it seems), Shawn Michaels tried to defy destiny as he went up against Undertaker one more time. Of course if Shawn lost, then good bye Showstopper.

Again, we all know what happened at WrestleMania 26. Shawn lost, retired in an emotional and heartfelt promo, and has only come back for the sporadic appearance.

While it was another classic battle, I can’t help but feel WWE really dropped the ball. We’re in an era now where with two two-hour programs and pay-per-views filling up time, there’s little room for the dream matches we all desire.

That’s why I’m sharing this with you today.

With the tag team championships meaning zilch, it would be behoove to the WWE give the belts a match also designed to help bring credibility back to the gold.

So with little ado, here we go!

BUILDUP: I’m not going into week by week detail, but I will give some highlights.

With the confrontation between Triple H and Kane backstage at the Royal Rumble, it seems as if a future match would be indelible.

Skip ahead to the Elimination Chamber event. After weeks of put-downs, bitch-outs and rejections, Shawn goes to the wayside and superkicks Undertaker out of the World Heavyweight Championship.

Shawn challenges Undertaker to another match the next night on Raw. Instead, Undertaker says he has another idea.

While it would be great to get his meaty hands around the scrawny little neck of Shawn’s, it’d also be great to rid Shawn of gold he possesses. Of course, that title would be the Unified Tag Team Championship with Triple H as his duo in crime.

Shawn has second thoughts, but before he can come up with an answer, the lights flicker back and forth which feature KANE to chokeslam Michaels right into the mat! Triple H tries to rush on down, but the lights go in and out again, and the D-X duo are the only ones in the ring!

The next week on Raw, the Chairman of the Board Vince McMahon comes out to announce some of the bigger matches for Wrestlemania. One of them would be in fact a Unified Tag Team Championship battle between D-Generation X and the Brothers of Destruction. There’ll be no disqualifications, no count-outs, no excuses. In a twist, the losing team will be FIRED!

In perhaps the only segment you’ll ever see Undertaker and Kane attempt to do comedy, they do a “darker” variation of a D-X sketch. Undertaker notes to Kane that at Wrestlemania, they’ll bury two punks who don’t know how to properly bury anyone. If they’re not down with that, then they got three words for them, “REST IN PEACE!” ‘Taker and Kane proceed to do the crotch chop, and straight out of 1999, burn up the symbol!

This angle wouldn’t be without the interferences from all sides. To singles and the occasional multi-tag match, blows have come to blows with both men on both teams. Wrestlemania cannot come soon enough!

ENTRANCES: For a big arena in a big city, both teams in the main event slot deserve the best looking entrances possible.

D-X’s entrance was somewhat mundane. Killing a little time, they high-fived fans down the ramp and around the ringside. No less popular than they were before, pyro and ballyhoo ensue as the original members of DX await their opponents.

The whole University of Phoenix Stadium goes BLACK. Only one voice is heard.

“OH YES!”

Paul Bearer, for the first time in Wrestlemania history, accompanies his son of a monster duo down the aisle way to Undertaker’s music, druids, and fire pyro. Over 70,000 fans, who had seen quite a stacked card already, dug down deep and marked out like little kids over the battle they were about to witness.

Undertaker takes off his hat, and the pyro off the turnbuckles explode as the eyes of the dead man roll back slow. A creepy aside to a dark angle already. It should be noted that Paul does not make a interference in this match, he actually just yells out when the moment calls for it.

Meek little Justin Roberts does the announcing duties as both teams are introduced. Kane & Undertaker are the challengers while Shawn Michaels & Triple H are the Unified WWE Tag Team Champions!

Apparently this match was so big, WWE was able to lure Jim Ross to a big payday just to call this one. Wrestlenewz.com rumors that Ross was paid in the 100K mark for the duty.

THE MATCH: At their corner, a rock-paper-scissors game dictates Shawn Michaels starts the match, while Undertaker starts out for his team.

A collar-and-elbow tie up begin the proceedings, with Undertaker immediately taking charge. He beats Shawn around the ring like a rag doll for a little bit. This includes a few whips, and a massive big boot which Shawn is able to sell like death itself!

However, Shawn is thrown into his corner, and Hunter makes the blind tag. Immediately, Hunter is almost choke-slammed, but Shawn is able to chopblock the left knee and the dead man is down!

Early, Hunter gets the advantage with working over the left leg. So successful, Hunter slaps on the Scorpion Death Lock for good measure!

Kane however makes the save and Hunter breaks the hold. As the younger brother is back to the post, ‘Taker makes the tag and now Triple H has to deal with the big red machine!

Some thunderous clothesline take down The Game, as well as a Irish-whip leading into a big boot! A suplex high and tight makes H writhe in pain off the impact.

With H now in a headlock, it seems as if a little bit of stalling may begin. After a minute of struggle, Triple H elbows Kane in the gut out of the maneuver, only to hit with yet another viscous clothesline!

Triple H is down while Kane, with a scary-looking smile, goes to the outside to retrieve a chair! Kane retrieves the chair from the ringside area, but Shawn gets Kane from behind on a sleeper hold!

Kane is able to throw down Michaels on the Spanish Announce Table, which doesn’t break, and then gets hit with a 2K fine as Michaels receives a tattoo on his head courtesy of a chair!

With Michaels out of the equation, Kane is thinking sordid thoughts. As he throws the chair into the ring, Kane hops onto the apron. only to receive a chopblock of his own by Michaels!

A surprisingly bloody mess, Michaels whips Kane into the ring post on the outside. Kane is then rolled back into the ring where Triple H crawls to a cover only to receive a 2!

Kane tags out to Undertaker as now the dead man does body punches to the King of Kings. Following that, Undertaker throws up Triple H for snake-eyes, then the big boot to the face! A leg drop leads to a near pin, but  a bloody HBK breaks up the three count.

Undertaker and Kane then throw out Shawn and Triple H in STEREO! Both men are thinking of high flying, but only one can really do it. So silently, Kane motions for the fans to VOTE! Kane goes to the ropes for his clothesline, and gets a small pop. Undertaker does a small charge for the leap, and gets a HUGE pop. The leap wins, and Undertaker winds up for it!

Going 338 miles an hour, ‘Taker hustles over the top and takes out D-X! The crowd chants “HOLY SHIT” as Jim Ross tries to announce the carnage.

Kane throws Triple H back in as ‘Taker does the same for Michaels. In an instant, the members of D-X are in desperation offense mode! Both brothers go down in a heap as well over 10 punches were exchanged.

Triple H, still the legal man, drags Kane up. Put into a headlock, but then was reversed into a suplex! Both men are down again, and Undertaker starts storming the ring apron like a mad man dowsing himself with water! Yes, the same thing at the house shows, he does at Wrestlemania!

Both teams have the crowd at a fevered pitch as Shawn has his hand out (with very little blood left) as well as ‘Taker. Simultaneous hot tags, and Undertaker goes to school on Michaels! HIGH IMPACT, HIGH IMPACT, AND MORE HIGH IMPACT!

‘Taker even does the Old School!

Setting up for a chokeslam, H chokes ‘Taker back in the corner. Shawn kips up, hits the elbow on a weak ‘Taker, and then tunes up the band!

Going for the superkick, Shawn’s move gets side-stepped into a DDT! Undertaker goes for the cover and gets a 2!

Kane tries to come in to chokeslam Michaels, but gets cut off, and suffers a DOUBLE DDT by Michaels and Triple H! It was done so swiftly that Kane rolled out of the ring!

As Undertaker gets up, he punches his way out of a hole, as he is then able to make both D-X members bash their heads together! This inadvertently busts Triple H open, as he still has enough whereto to give a low blow to the dead man!

Placing him in the corner closest to the announce tables, Triple H does the mounted punches, only to be given a Last Ride!

Both men are down, and the crowd is buzzing. For what team I don’t know, there isn’t a partisan to be had.

Soon enough, Undertaker gets on his feet, only to be superkicked out of nowhere by HBK, then turned around into a Pedigree by Triple H!

The crowd is hushed. Everyone, including Kane on the outside who might have suffered a concussion, is down.

In the shadows, Triple H slowly crawls for...

1..

2..

I need a distraction, so ladies and gentlemen, here’s Mr. Conway Twitty!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

NO!

Undertaker barely kicks out of the impossible. Another pin attempt, and ‘Taker rises! The cheers are DEAFENING!

Shawn and Triple H are beaten without mercy at this point, and receive a double chokeslam!

Meanwhile, Kane gets back in the ring and shares a hearty laugh with his brother. They know what they’re gonna do!

‘Taker gets Shawn and Hunter is Kane’s bitch. Simultaneous Tombstone Piledrivers put the duo down! 1-2-3!

Winners and NEW Unified Tag Team Champions: Kane & Undertaker!

As the lights go purple/red with a 18-0 symbol flash, Paul Bearer celebrates with his boys as they are now champs once again.

Meanwhile, Triple H and Shawn Michaels release its time to hang it up. A solid handshake by all four combatants seal the deal as the BOD leaves, and DX gets “THANK YOU DX” chants.

The show ends on somewhat of a somber note, but at least it was a main event worthy of the card it belonged on. Shawn and Hunter made an emotional in-ring promo the next night, and that puts a rap to both of the men’s in-ring careers.
